The Black Salt Room
About

A small studio, run by one person.

The Black Salt Room is a home-based breathwork and yoga studio in Toronto, Ontario. Six people at a time, lit by candle, paced for actual rest. Run by Alina Thorne for people in Toronto who want a quieter way back into practice.

The Story

Alina Thorne

After a decade in high-pressure work, I needed a place to rest that did not feel like a clinic or a spa. I wanted a room that felt human. So I made one.

The Black Salt Room is a home-based studio in Toronto. Classes are small on purpose. Lighting is low on purpose. The pace is slow because the nervous system does not negotiate.

I teach breathwork, yin yoga, restorative yoga, and meditation in a way that leaves room for real bodies and real weeks. Some people arrive after work from across the city. Some live around the corner. The point is the same: come in without having to gear up.

If you are tired, anxious, recovering, grieving, or just curious, you are welcome here. There is no level to reach, and nothing to perform.

Philosophy

Three quiet commitments.

  • Nervous-system first

Every class is paced to bring the body out of high alert. Down-regulation comes before flexibility, strength, or anything performative.

  • Slow over efficient

No timed flows. No checklists. The work is what happens when nobody is rushing you. Sessions are longer than most and never start sharp.

  • Small groups, safer rooms

Six people maximum. The room is laid out so nobody is in anybody else’s way, and so the teacher can actually see and support each person.

The Space

Built to feel like a room, not a studio.

A weathered wooden surface with a small vase and dark picture frames.

Wood and warmth

Old timber, smooth ceramics, nothing precious or untouchable.

A single candle burning low on a worn wooden table.

Candle, not lamp

Low amber light, never overhead fluorescents. Easier on the eyes and the system.

A linen-draped couch with a candle and dried flowers nearby.

Soft floor

Linen, bolsters, blankets, and enough cushioning to actually rest on the floor.
